Patient Safety Coalitions

  • •  Washington Patient Safety Coalition (WPSC)

The mission of the Washington Patient Safety Coalition (WPSC) is “to reduce medical errors and improve safety for people receiving health care in Washington.” The WPSC was created in 2002 under the organizational structure of the Foundation for Health Care Quality (FHCQ), a nonprofit, public-private partnership bridging the concerns of medicine, health insurance, government agencies, employers and consumers. It was created with the direct support and involvement of the Washington State Department of Health and the Washington State Health Care Authority, and it has the support of a broad contingent of Washington's primary stakeholders/movers in health care.

Activities of the WPSC includes successful rollouts of statewide 'wrong site surgery' and 'medication safety' initiatives. Evolving information technology support is addressed in the annual 'Information Technology and Patient Safety Conference' held in May of 2004 and 2005 and June 7, 2006.
